Chenai: The three-day food festival in Chennai will be held on August 12, 13 and 14 at Island Ground. The “Singara Chennai Food Festival 2022” is expected to showcase traditional culinary expertise including children’s food and cultural events.

According to a report on The Indian Express, the festival is organized by the Tamil Nadu Food Security Department along with Eat Right India.

Eat Right India, an initiative of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), works to improve public health in India. It also aims to combat lifestyle-related diseases that are on the rise due to negative dietary trends.

Through the event, the organizers also aim to provide an opportunity for women in the self-help group to prove their cooking skills and revive traditional foods. The festival will feature varieties of dishes ranging from Raagi Puttu, a savory breakfast recipe made from ragi to Mudakathan Dosai, a healthy dosa made from green vegetables and Iruttu Kadai Halwa, a signature halwa recipe from Tirunelveli district.

The festival will also welcome children who will show their culinary skills. There will also be performances by folk artists.

Several programs will also be carried out for the populations to help them identify adulterated foods and prepare healthy traditional foods.

The last day of the event will also have a walkathon. The three-day event will have booths from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Dr Satheesh Kumar, a designated food safety officer in Chennai, said 150 stalls will be set up at Island Ground and the food festival will feature 90% of our traditional food. Several celebrities are also part of the food festival.

The event was supposed to take place last year but was postponed due to the pandemic, he said.
