Getting enough protein in your diet at any age is important because it “can help maintain muscle mass, strength, bone health, and is one of the best ways to help you with your health. weight loss efforts, “says Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, author at GoWellness.
However, protein becomes even more crucial for your well-being as you get older. “People over the age of 60 are at greater risk of losing muscle mass, and not eating enough protein throughout the day could speed up the process,” says D’Angelo.
She suggests incorporating more foods like eggs, salmon, grass-fed beef, chicken, or turkey into your diet when you can. “You can even develop a healthy morning habit by choosing to add whey protein to your coffee or oatmeal, that way you can start your day strong.”

Another common habit to avoid in your 60s is becoming dehydrated and not drinking enough water. “As you get older, your feeling of thirst may decrease,” says Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, the author of Finally full, finally thin, and a member of our medical expert board, “as a result, people in their 60s tend to be more dehydrated than those who are younger.”

Many people might not realize it, but eating late at night can be harmful to your health, even if you eat healthier foods!
“Eating late at night often goes hand in hand with ultra-processed junk food and is particularly problematic, as overeating at night has been linked to weight gain, blood sugar fluctuations and diabetes in an already vulnerable population.” Young warns.

One of the worst eating habits to adopt is not getting enough fiber in your daily diet because this nutrient is essential in helping you lead a healthy lifestyle.
“Make sure to include insoluble fiber to stay regular and soluble fiber to feed the beneficial bacteria that live in your gut to improve nutrient absorption, reduce inflammation, and have a positive impact on your mood,” says Kara Landau, RD, dietician expert in intestinal health and founder of Uplift Food.
For a healthy dose of fiber, try incorporating foods like berries, oatmeal, apples, beans, or chickpeas into your daily diet.
