Food distribution

Food for People will hold a “Spring Drive-Through Food Giveaway” in the North Parking Lot of the Bayshore Mall on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

People can stock up on non-perishable staples and fresh produce. Those wishing to participate are asked to wear a mask and stay in their car; volunteers will load the food directly into the vehicles. Those without a vehicle can make an appointment at Food for People’s Eureka Food Pantry, which recently moved to 1720 10th St. Call 707-407-0447 to schedule an appointment.

For the Night of Art

The Trinidad Civic Club will be participating as an information post during April’s Trinidad Art Night with event times available in the Trinidad Town Hall Club on Saturdays from 6-9pm.

A lifetime collection of crucifix art from around the world will be on display at Trinidad City Hall, along with an art exhibit featuring paintings, prints and photographs. Jewelry, memorabilia and other items will also be on sale to benefit the Memorial Lighthouse Project.

Sweet and savory treats prepared by Rabia O’Loren will be sold as a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders in Ukraine. Treats include Honey Nut Cake, Persian Baklava (vegan), Saffron Nut Balls (gluten-free, vegan), Moroccan Orange Almond Balls (gluten-free, vegan), of Austrian Rum, Chocolate Caramel Pecans, Salmon on Baguette and Blue Cheese Date Pops.

tai chi event

In celebration of World Tai Chi Day and World Healing Day, a special Tai Chi and Qigong event is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in Arcata Plaza.

This morning of moving meditation and mindfulness training is free to the public. No Tai Chi experience is necessary to participate. Everyone is welcome.

Walk in the marshes

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will be hosting a free guided field trip to Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30-11am.

Everyone will meet leader Drew Meyer at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake). April is one of the best months of the year for shorebirds as godwits, curlews, sandpipers, willows and other sandpipers make their way to their breeding grounds. The breeding season will also be in full swing for many terrestrial species, including warblers, hummingbirds and chickadees.

Walk around the swamp

Friends of Arcata Swamp is sponsoring a free tour of Arcata Swamp and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday.

Everyone will meet Chief Paul Johnson at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk, rain or shine, focusing on the ecology of the marsh. Masks are recommended but not required inside the building, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. For more information, call 707-826-2359.

A pancake breakfast is planned on Sunday from 8 am to 11 am during the grand reopening of the Grange d’Eau Douce.

Breakfast is $8 for adults and $5 for children. The menu will include pancakes, sausage or ham, scrambled eggs, homemade applesauce and salsa. Sweet Harmony will provide musical entertainment for the morning.

Volunteer work day

The next City of Arcata “Sidewalk Cleanup Day” in the Valley West neighborhood will be Sunday from 9-11 a.m.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to attend, and the job will be to pick up non-hazardous items left in public spaces in the neighborhood. Those wishing to participate are asked to report to the entrance of Valley West Park, located on Hallen Drive, at 9 a.m. A registration table will be set up for volunteers to receive instructions and supplies upon arrival.

Trash pickers, safety vests, gloves and buckets will be provided, and community members who have their own cleaning supplies are encouraged to bring them. Participants must bring their own water and a face covering. Volunteers will be required to sign a Volunteer Agreement and COVID-19 Liability Waiver.

farmers market

The Willow Creek Cannabis Alliance is hosting a Willow Creek Farmers Market May 7 from 1-5 p.m. at Herb & Market, 427 H St., Arcata.

This is an opportunity to meet farmers and benefit from discounts on products. The Big Island Kine food truck will be on site, DJ Goldilocks will provide music and artists will show off their work during the event.
