Katha – Putrada Ekadashi Katha

According to the quick history of Putrada or Pavitra Ekadashi, at the beginning of the Dwapar era, there was a city named Mahishmati, in which a king named Mahijit ruled, but the king did not find the kingdom pleasant as he did not had no sons. He believed that for those without children, this world and the hereafter are painful. The king took many measures to obtain the son’s happiness, but the king did not obtain the son.

Seeing old age coming, the king called the representatives of the subjects and said: “O people! I have no unfairly earned money in my treasury. Nor have I ever snatched wealth from the gods and Brahmins. I didn’t even take someone else’s inheritance, I continued to raise the subjects like a son. I continued to punish criminals like sons and brothers. I have never hated anyone. Everyone is considered equal. I always love gentlemen. I have no sons even though I rule a kingdom just like this. So I feel very sad, what is the reason?

To examine this matter of King Mahijit, the ministers and representatives of the subjects went to the forest. There he saw great sages and sages. For the fulfillment of the king’s best wishes, he continued to see a great ascetic sage. In one of the ashrams he saw a very old man of religion, a great ascetic, selfless in God, Jitendriya, Jitatma, Jitkrodha, the knower of the esoteric elements of Sanatan Dharma, the knower of all scriptures, Mahatma Lomash Muni , whose kalpa was spent. A Rome fell when this happened.

Everyone went to greet the sage. Seeing these people, the sage asked why you came? Of course, I will do you good. I was born only for the good of others, do not doubt it. Hearing such words of sage Lomash, everyone said – O Maharshe! You are more capable than Brahma of knowing us. So you erase our doubts.

The virtuous king of Mahishmati Puri obeys the people of Mahijit like a son. Yet she is sad because she has no children. They added that we were his subjects. Therefore, we are also sad because of his grief. With your vision, we are confident that this crisis of ours will disappear forever as many problems are removed by the mere sight of great men. Now please tell me how to become the son of a king.

Hearing this conversation, the sage closed his eyes for a while and after knowing the story of the king’s previous birth, started saying that this king was a poor Vaishya in his previous birth. Being poor, he did many bad deeds. He went from village to village to do business. Once on the Dwadashi day of Shukla Paksha of the month of Jyeshtha, at noon, when he was hungry and thirsty for two days, he went to a tank to drink water. In the same place, a thirsty cow who immediately married was drinking water.

The king took away this thirsty cow after drinking water and started drinking water himself, that’s why the king had to bear this pain. Hungry on Ekadashi’s day, he became the king and because he abducted the thirsty cow by drinking water, he has to bear the pain of separation from the son. Hearing this, everyone started saying that O sage! Atonement for sins is also written in the scriptures. Therefore, how can this king’s sin be destroyed, please suggest such a remedy.

The sages of Lomash started saying that on the Ekadashi of Shravan Shukla Paksha, also called Putrada Ekadashi, all of you should fast and wake up at night, then this sin of the previous king’s birth will be permanently destroyed, along with the le king must have a son. Hearing such words from sage Lomash, all the subjects including the ministers returned to the city and when Shravan Shukla Ekadashi came, everyone fasted and woke Putrada Ekadashi as per the orders of the sage.

After that, the fruit of his virtue was given to the king on the day of Dwadashi. Under the effect of this virtue, the queen conceived and at the end of her period of procreation, a splendid son was born to her. Therefore, O Rajan! This Shravan Shukla Ekadashi was called Putrada. Therefore, those who wish to have children’s happiness must do so quickly.

By reading this story of Putrada Ekadashi and listening to his greatness, a person becomes free from all sins by enjoying children in this world and attains paradise in the next. It is only by listening to this story that one gets the fruits of Vaipayi Yagya.
